Jake Jones engineers last lap pass giving JJR first 2013 checkered at Williams Grove.
Saturday, August 3rd was already a big day for Jake Jones Racing. It was “Kids Night” at Williams Grove Speedway and with two little boys of their own, Jake, his wife Steph and his whole family put a lot of time and effort into making the day special for all children in attendance. Little did the team know that it would be extra special for them also, once the nights on track racing began.
After a bad pill draw and a last row starting spot for his 8 lap heat race, Jake race up through the field of late models to finish 4th in his competitive qualifying race thus locking him into the nights 20 lap feature. The crew went to work making changes to the Miller’s Racing Parts sponsored Lazer chassis and by feature time they had made all the right adjustments. From the moment the green flag waved, Jake knew that he had a great car under him. Spending the first half biding his time riding around in positions 6th through 8th, Jake started his charge towards the front once he saw starter Randy Eichelberger give the half way sign. With 5 laps to go Jake moved this Insinger Performance Fuels #43 into third place and immediately began to run down the leaders who were having quite a battle at the front of the field. With the leaders in striking distance and running each other very hard, Jake was planning his move when the second place car spun right in front of the 3rd running Jones. Jake was able to miss the spinning car and after a front stretch confrontation between the 2 leaders, Jake restarted in 2nd place with only a few laps remaining. Waiting until the first turn on the last lap to make his move, Jake set sail around the top of the leader and pulled away to the first win of 2013. Jake currently sits second in the 358 late Model point standing at Williams Grove.
“It was a great night all around” said the 30 years old when reached at his self owned Miller’s Racing Parts. “The car was great. Brian and the guys did a great job. It is hard to believe it has been 3 races since my last win. I ran those guys down and I was not sure what to do. They were using each other up pretty hard so I knew catching and passing them were 2 different things. On that restart with 3 to go I had made up my mind I was going to need to set sail around the top to win and the car did exactly what I wanted it to do. It was just one of those perfect nights on the track. The chassis, engine and tires were perfect. You do not get many nights like that so you need to take advantage of them when you can. My crew works real hard and I have some great sponsors. It was great to put it all together for them. I need to also thank all the people that helped with Kid’s Night. It is a night JJR looks forward to and with everyone helping, we try to do our part to represent the speedway the best we can. Unfortunately, the Kids Night activities wore my sons out and Steph took the boys home to get them to bed and my wife and sons missed the win. I guess I will just need to do it again this week so they can be there” added Jake with a laugh.
